SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE/AP) - A bear has been shot dead after attacking a tent and scratching a camper at Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico.
A spokesman for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Marty Frentzel, says a Philmont employee shot the bear Tuesday night after it jumped the tent and scratched the camper.
Injuries to the 14-year-old scout include a bite to the hand and a deep scratch to the head. The scout was treated at Philmont and then transferred to Santa Fe for additional treatment.
The bear, 2 to 3-year-old, 150-pound male, was killed within two miles of a previous attack on a camper at Philmont, the Department said. There was no apparent cause for the attack The bear will be tested for rabies.
Another bear was killed late last month after separate incidents in which a camper and goat were injured at Philmont.
Earlier in June, a bear pulled a woman from her tent in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque. It released her when she punched it in the nose.
