PREWITT, N.M. (KRQE) - State police say icy road conditions were the primary factor in a fatal accident that killed two people in a head-on crash with a semi-truck Sunday morning.

The accident occurred on I-40 between Grants and Gallup at mile post 63, near Prewitt, N.M shutting down I-40 temporarily while the scene was cleared.

Three women were heading into New Mexico from Arizona when police say the driver was going too fast around a curve. The automobile skidded over the median crashing head-on into a semi-truck traveling in the westbound lanes.

Two women died at the scene and a third was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital. The semi-truck driver was taken to a hospital in Grants.
