ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The controversial coyote hunt that sparked national attention is now over, with a total of 39 coyotes killed.

On Saturday, 52 teams or about 80 hunters participated in the hunt, which was sponsored by Gunhawk Firearms in Los Lunas.

Gunhawk says the goal was to help manage the coyote population.

The winner of the hunt killed 11 coyotes and took home the prize, an assault rifle.

Animal activists called the contest cruel and inhumane.
