AZTEC, N.M. (AP) - Aztec High School is requiring students to wear their school identification badges around their necks while they're at school.

Principal Warman Hall says all the students will have ID badges within the next week or so.

School officials say the badges were created for student safety.

Hall told The Daily Times newspaper that any high school sees students who drop out but try to hang out on campus. He says they're not allowed to do that.

He says no specific incident led to the ID policy, which other high schools have implemented.

Hall says the school is developing other ways to use the IDs, such as having students use the badge's bar code to check out books, buy lunch and gain access to athletic events or dances.
