Students in need up, donations down

PTA Clothing Bank in dire need

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The PTA Clothing Bank has been serving Albuquerque students for 63 years.

But this year, they risk closing early if things don't turn around for them quickly, meaning kids who need it most might be turned away.

The number of kids who need help is up, but donations are at an all time low. The PTA Clothing Bank provides clothes, new shoes, socks and underwear to APS students who need it. Each year, they clothe up to 3,000 students.

"Students are referred by their counselor, nurse or teacher if they notice kids are wearing the same clothes over and over again, if they notice that they're not fitting," said Kim Kerschen, director of the PTA Clothing Bank.

The PTA Clothing Bank is seeing a record number of APS students this year, at least 200 more than this time last year. The group is also $20,000 below its normal budget this year due to a lack of donations.

"This is absolutely the worst it's ever been," said Kerschen.

Kerschen said the PTA Clothing Bank is busiest the week after Thanksgiving. If donations don't increase, Kerschen said it may close its doors by February.

"If we don't have it, we don't have it," said Kerschen. "If you've ever seen a child come in one way and leave a completely different, standing up tall,  and smiling, it's a huge difference."

The PTA Clothing Bank will pick up donations or you can drop them off at their warehouse at 1730 University Boulevard Southeast.
