APS beefs up security after 12-12-12 threat

Anonymous threats of shootings on 12/12/12

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Security has been increased at an Albuquerque middle school Wednesday, after two students allegedly planned a shooting spree at the school for 12-12-12.

The threats surfaced back in September.

Since then the two sixth graders involved have been kicked out of school.

Still, extra precautions were on campus Wednesday and APD squad cars were in plain view.

A third student first brought the alleged plot to the attention of school officials.

According to APS, one of the boys planned a shooting spree here because a girl he liked didn't feel the same way.

The plan was for both boys to kill themselves after the shooting spree.

Those students have now been expelled.

No official word yet on how many students stayed home from school Wednesday.

But parents who did take their kids to school Wednesdayhad their concerns.
"I was hesitant to bring them in but i have every confidence school security will take care of the issue,” Jose Acevedo said.

Other parents shared their thoughts.

"We talked about, just in case, if there's anything that goes on, what to do in case of a shooting,” Christopher Garcia said.

Official attendance numbers should be available Wednesday afternoon.

Police plan to maintain a presence here throughout the day.

The names of the boys have not been released.

At this point the two have not been charged.

APS says if parents chose to keep their kids homes Wednesday out of safety concerns, it would qualify as an excused absence.

The threat at Tony Hillerman is not the only one at a school in New Mexico.

On Monday, someone wrote on a bathroom stall at Socorro High School " I’m going to blow up the school on 12-12-12."

Parents have been notified and there will be extra security at the school Wednesday
