Security in place as APS classes resume

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It is back to class for tens of thousands of kids who go to Albuquerque Public Schools.
    
The tragic school shootings in Newtown , Connecticut are still fresh on the minds of many, including administrators at APS.
    
As kids head to school across Albuquerque, nothing will be different at first, but administrators say that they will be sitting down with local law enforcement very soon.
    
For now, APS says their safety plans for all schools will remain in place. They also say they do not have any immediate plans for stepping up officer presence on any of the campuses throughout town.
    
District spokesperson Monica Armenta says that school administrators along with the APS chief of police will sit down very soon with Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz to discuss possible improvisions.
    
Officer presence was stepped up at Albuquerque schools in the days following the Connecticut shooting, but only to calm parent’s fears.
    
Although that is not expected Tuesday, administrators want parents to know that their kids are safe.

”Student safety has always been our number one priority so on a regular basis we debrief, we review and we practice our site safety plans and that will continue to happen throughout 2013 and beyond,” Armenta said.

APS says the meeting between them and APD will likely happen in the next few weeks.
    
They say they currently have 180 officers to cover campuses throughout the district.
    
Fifty six of them are armed.
