RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - Rio Rancho Public Schools officials last week approved a resolution to name the district's next elementary school after slain Sandoval County sheriff's deputy Sgt. Joe Harris.
Plans for the elementary school are contingent on state funding.
The Sandoval County Commission last month voted to name a sheriff's office substation after Harris. The substation is near the Highway 550 New Mexico Rail Runner station.
Harris was shot and killed in July during a shootout at a cabin in the Jemez Mountains. Harris and Deputy Teresa Moriarty were staking out the area to try to catch a wanted burglar.
The burglar, Joseph Burgess, was also shot and killed during the shootout.
