Program loses funding at NM Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) - Thousands of low-income students have been exposed to college through a popular program at New Mexico Highlands University.

The future of the Upward Bound Math and Science program is uncertain now that federal funds for it have run out.

The Las Vegas Optic reports that the program wasn't offered to students this calendar year.

Highlands President Jim Fries says the university is seeking a four-year, $250,000 grant to fund the program. Even if the school is successful, the money would represent less than half of the previous federal grant.

The program has served high school students from around northern New Mexico.

Dean of Students Fidel Trujillo had been among them. He says the program that operated for decades at the university helps students realize their academic potential.
