ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The annual Kutz for Kids program was a hit Sunday, as police and the Dream Big program gave kids their back-to-school haircuts.
It is a free event, aimed at helping underprivileged youth in Albuquerque get ready to go back to school with all the essentials.
So many people showed up at one point organizers had to stop cutting hair.
“We're providing free haircuts, providing free school supplies, free backpacks, giving them a chance to interact with law enforcement in the area,” Officer Robert Gibbs said.
The event also included free food, music, and even the APD helicopter for kids to look at.
This all took place at the APD academy on 2nd Street.
Kids who could not get their haircuts there were sent to a hair salon on Juan Tabo.
About 1,000 kids got their hair cut Sunday and total of about 1,500 attended the event.
