SOCORRO, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico Tech has been awarded a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Justice Department to help train local law enforcement agencies to deal with drug trafficking threats.
The training will be organized by the college's Border Security Center.
The center specializes in training aimed at countering kidnapping, extortion and violence associated with trafficking and border smuggling in the Southwest.
The funding announced Tuesday by U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman will support the center's efforts to train officers to deal with Mexican drug cartels and smuggling organizations.
In 2009, the New Mexico Democrat also helped secure $30 million in federal stimulus funds to help law enforcement agencies in states along the U.S.-Mexico border tackle border-related crime.
