ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - School police broke up a large fight at Rio Grande High School that injured one student and drew Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies to the campus late Thursday morning.

An as yet unknown number of students joined in the disturbances that began about 11:30 a.m. and apparently involved rival groups of students.  One student complaining of rib pain was checked out by medics from the county fire department, Albuquerque Public Schools spokesman Rigo Chavez told News 13.

Sheriff's deputies said by the time they arrived Albuquerque Public Schools police had already gotten the kids under control.  The deputies stayed on campus through the lunch hour.

"The two groups of student that were involved are usually segregated from each other," sheriff's spokesperson Jennifer Vega-Brown said. "One group goes in school but in a different area, I believe, and there may be some scheduling problems that doesn't allow for that right now, so the groups were intermingled."

APS said three students were detained with two cited and one arrested.  Two students attempting to leave the scene were hit with pepper spray.

They will likely be dealt with administratively, but if their parents can't be contacted they could be arrested.
