Denzel dollars revive Boys, Girls Club

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE-KBIM) - With all the news about stimulus money the recently closed Roswell Boys & Girls Club got its own sudden financial boost from an unexpected source.

Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington donated $50,000 to the financially troubled club which went public with its money problems last month saying expenses were up while donations had dropped.

Washington was in Albuquerque filming his new movie "The Book of Eli" when he saw a story about the club closing. He felt compelled to help as a one-time member of a Boys & Girls Club in Vermont and current spokesman for the organization.

The actor made the donation Wednesday, and already a mural of his face is painted on a wall at the facility.

Eastern New Mexico Medical Center also recently donated $5,000 to get the Roswell club back on its feet.
