ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - From February 1 until March 15, Albuquerque Public School parents can request to have their children go to different schools outside their home attendance area.
Applications can be filled out at APS district headquarters at 6400 Uptown Boulevard in Northeast Albuquerque or online at www.aps.edu
If their child has already applied for a transfer in the past, they don't need to re-apply unless they're changing schools. However, if the child is going from a different grade level such as elementary to mid, or mid to high school they will need to complete a new form.
There are some conditions on whether or not the request can even be granted. According to a press release from APS, transfers are granted on a space-available basis and in compliance with district, state and federal requirements. They will also use a random lottery system in granting transfer approvals.
Some priorities will be given to requests if the student lives within the boundary of the requested school. Also they will be considered if they previously went to the school. Other considerations include if the student already has a sibling attending the school, they have a parent who works there or if they have a parent on active duty at Kirtland Air Force Base.
One critical consideration will be if the requested school has enough room to accommodate the student.
