ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Rio Grande High School officials announced some students may be in the wrong grade and could be dropped back a year.

The letter was sent home on Tuesday.  For the most part, it was a repeat explanation of how the scheduling mess happened but on the back of the letter the school outlined the latest problem plaguing the school.

The letter states: “Due to a transcript review, some students will be in a different grade such as 9th grade instead of 10th grade.”

The school said the reason for this is some students have not completed the required classes.

One student says he found out he is missing a chemistry class. While he's classified as a junior today, he thinks by next Tuesday he'll be labeled a sophomore again.

Next Tuesday, is when the school said the new schedules will be out. The letter said that is when students will learn what grade they are actually in.

If they have been dropped a grade they will find out which credits they will need to make up this year or during next summer break to catch up.

Some students said the news could lead to unmotivated students.

“It would discourage them because knowing that they were already a junior and they only had one year to go and them telling them no--you're a sophomore,” Rio Grande High Senior said.

While this senior and others like Sheniqua Twitty, who know they are in the correct grade, the scheduling mess could derail their graduation plans.

“On my schedule I have piano and art and English 11, I don’t need, and algebra 2 which I don't need,” Twitty said.

What Twitty needs is English 12. If she doesn't get in, she will not graduate. Twitty said she is not the only senior waiting for a schedule change.

“Out of my friends there are six of us,” Twitty said. “Some of them just stopped coming to school because they don't want to waste their time.”

Twitty said if her schedule is not correct by next week she is transferring out of Rio Grande. She said two of her friends have already jumped ship to Del Norte High School.

Some students said their fellow Rio Grande High classmates should take more responsibility for their schedules. Others blame councilors for not catching the mistakes earlier.
