APD going after school-zone speeding

School resource officers, yard signs part of plan

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque's mayor and police chief announced plans to crack down on school zone speeding Wednesday.

APD traffic officers started monitoring school zones when the school year started Monday.

On top of that, there will also be 15 school resource officers handing out tickets to school-zone speeders.

APD Chief Ray Schultz says there will be no second chances for drivers caught going too fast near schools.

"This is zero tolerance," Schultz said. "There are no warning citations."

In addition to the stepped up patrols and enforcement, APD is asking homeowners living near schools to put out "Slow Down Albuquerque" signs in front of their homes.

APD has 3,500 signs available for pickup spread across APD Area Commands around the city.

APD says on Monday and Tuesday, motorcycle officers handed out 62 citations in school zone. That doesn't include officers in other units.
