LAS CRUCES (KRQE) - The departing provost at New Mexico State is taking hard shots at the university.

Wendy Wilkins resigned the top academic post last week.

The Las Cruces Sun News says she sent a three page letter to interim president Manuel Pacheco the same day.

Wilkins claims the state's second largest university has floundered to become a top research institution.

She says the school has "failed to distinguish itself from the sort of academic work carried out by community colleges."

Wilkins is on annual leave thru the end of the year.

New Mexico State president Barbara Couture mysteriously quit in September. The still unexplained deal netted her $500,000.
