Jury clears Farmington cop in shooting

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A federal court jury has ruled against a lawsuit that claimed excessive force by a Farmington police officer who shot a man in a Wal-Mart parking lot in three years ago.

The jury in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque deliberated 15 hours before returning its verdict in favor of Farmington police officer Shawn Scott.

The family of Clint John had sued Scott for damages, alleging he acted beyond his rights as an officer when he shot and killed the 21-year-old Kirtland man in June 2006.

Scott says Friday evening's verdict was a relief.
