Witness conflicts plead down fatal crash case

SANTA FE (KRQE) - The doctor who drove drunk and got in a Santa Fe crash that killed a 4-year-old girl will not got to jail after she struck a plea deal with prosecutors Thursday.

Deborah Aaron could have faced up to six years in prison for vehicular homicide for the January crash that killed 4-year-old Yuliana Reyes Vasquez.

Aaron and the little girl's family, in tears, were in court as the judge accepted the plea deal Thursday.

That deal dropped a vehicular homicide charge with Aaron pleading no contest to a misdemeanor DWI.

Aaron was to sentenced 90 days of supervised probation but has already been on an ankle monitor for eight months, so she was given credit for that time served.

Blood results after the January crash showed Aaron was drunk, but the prosecutors said they couldn't prove the crash was her fault.

That's because it's possible the victim's mother, Karla Vasquez, ran a red light into the doctor's path. Witnesses on the scene also gave conflicting statements.

"Specifically there were two groups, who were based on their statements were in the same place at the same time but saw two entirely different things," Deputy District Attorney Doug Couleur said. "One said it the light on St. Francis was red, and one said the light on St. Francis was green."

Aaron lives in Arizona now. She will be on unsupervised probation for a year and have to take DWI classes.

The little girl's family has filed a civil suit against Aaron claiming she caused the crash.
