ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An inmate who escaped from the San Juan County jail is back in police custody.
Detention guards reported 23-year-old Andrew Whittenberg had escaped from a transport van Thursday night.
They say he somehow managed to get a key to his handcuff and used it to free himself.
Whittenberg then broke the van window, took off to a nearby residence and stole a pickup truck.
He was eventually captured by an officer who was in the area.
Whittenberg was behind bars for trying to escape from jail.
He now faces new charges of escape.
