ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Got milk? These inmates didn't and they weren't happy about it. What came next was all caught on video.
The inmates are used to getting two or three cartons of milk with every breakfast. But this time, they only got one and that's when things got crazy.
The 22 inmates at the San Juan County Detention Center were acting more like bratty kids than adults. Throwing quite a temper tantrum, over milk. You can still see the breakfast trays left on tables.
“Some of the inmates had gotten upset because some of them did not get seconds or thirds on milk,” said Deputy Administrator Daniel Webb.
Jail guards weren't about to baby these guys. They fired pepperballs and when puffs of smoke emerged, the prisoners hit the deck and the guards in riot gear move in.
Administrators say this may seem like a small thing but it could have been very dangerous.
“It had all the earmarking of becoming a riot,” said Webb.
That’s why they quashed the uprising so quickly. Webb says no inmates or guards were injured. And even though you may not think they deserve their extra milk anymore Webb says the jail won't hold this against them.
“We are not going to punish the masses because of the actions of a few.”
Police and deputies showed up to back up the jail's tactical team.
