ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - From the outside it looked like a normal apartment, but there was a disturbing secret inside. Albuquerque Police say they discovered a teenager locked inside a closet . Her rescue was caught on camera.
Cops were called to the apartments on Montgomery near I-25 after a man called from Detroit saying he'd been told his daughter was locked in a closet.
“I can hear a kid crying in there,” you can hear an officer say on the video. He’s talking about the teen's 9-year-old sister, who finally opens a window and cops climb in.
It's dark in the apartment but you can hear the officer when he frees the girl. The girl says her mother, Detra Davis, put her in the closet for misbehaving.
“How long have you been in that closet?” the officer asks.
“Since Monday night,” says the girl.
This was a Friday.
The teen says her mother had taken the door knob off and even removed the light bulb so she couldn't find a way to escape. The girl said she was let out for about 10 minutes at a time when her mother was home to eat and use the bathroom.
Detra Davis has been charged with child abuse, and is out on bail. Her daughters were turned over to family members.
