ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The two men who confronted, grabbed and groped a University of New Mexico student on campus eight days ago still have not been caught. Now, police are pressing their search for the pair, trying something new to get more tips and maybe put a dent in overall campus crime.
The university police department will be launching a new tip hotline.
“After we had this recent incident we were brought to our attention that people didn't really have a way to get a hold of us if they had any tips,” UNM Police Lt. Robert Haarhues said.
That incident, a student attacked while jogging near Johnson Field eight days ago. She says the two black men, dressed all in black, held her and groped her under her clothes. She screamed and they took off.
Police are still looking for the men and sources say we should know more about them later this week.
Cops are hoping someone will say something, or should will text or e-mail something to break the case.
“It's easier than talking on the phone they can do it from a smart phone or any other phone,” said Haarhues.
The police department used to have a phone for people to call in tips. Problem is no one was calling so they got rid of it. They say they do get tips through crime stoppers but those tips go to Albuquerque Police first and sometimes it takes a few days for them to hear about those tips.
“There is 50,000 strong out there and if they can report it to us it gives us the ability to hopefully act on it,” Haarhues said.
UNM PD says it knows students and staff on campus are seeing and hearing things. Things that could be found on a new anonymous Facebook page, UNM confessions ; that KRQE News 13 showed you on Friday.
The site has allegations of porn on professors computers, sex crimes, theft and vandalism. All things UNM's police department would like to know about first.
‘People are hearing something people saw something, something that people didn't really want to get involved in at the time people can always email in what they saw,” Haarhues said.
The Policetips@unm.edu tip line is now up and running.
This new system will not be anonymous. UNM says if someone wants to stay unknown they can still contact crime stoppers.
