ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Shoppers ran for cover after shots rang out at an Albuquerque Kmart Sunday evening.
Police say teh injured man, David Montoya, was shoplifting, but his friend has a very different story after the shooting spilled into the parking lot. The violence didn't end there.
It happened at the Kmart off Carlisle and I-40 just before 6:30 p.m.
Montoya's friend said he saw the whole incident unfold.
"My friend was actually talking to the assailant, the one that shot him, through the doors of the Kmart," said Anthony Daly. "They were arguing and as he left he was running. They were trying to run him over after shooting him."
According to Daly, Montoya was shot multiple times after getting into a fight with another man inside the store. Daly said as Montoya ran out the Kmart and the assailants, possibly gang members, ran him over with their White Cadillac.
That's when Daly says they started shooting.
Police have a slightly different story. They say the wounded man was shoplifting as he fled the store. They also say he even pulled a knife on security.
Both believe the wounded man was run over right outside the front doors and police say he was shot twice in the parking lot full of people.
Daly was shocked.
"It's insane how people can be right out in the public and just open fire like that," Daly said.
Daly says Montoya has gun shout wounds to his arm, right thigh and pelvis. Police expect him to live.
The men in the Cadillac are still on the run. It's unclear what charges they could face.
