ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A fatal drunk driving case embroiled in controversy is finally underway in Santa Fe.

Opening arguments started Monday morning for repeat drunk driver Juan de Dios Cordova.  He’s accused of veering into oncoming traffic near Chimayo and killing Mark Wolfe over Memorial Day weekend in 2011.

The case gained notoriety because Cordova’s truck was accidentally crushed and sold for scrap. The Rio Arriba Sheriffs office has come under fire for waiting five hours to take Cordova’s blood for a DWI test and then storing it improperly.

Cordova is the brother of former Rio Arriba County Sheriff Nelson Cordova .

Cordova’s trial is expected to last over a week.
