HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) - Hobbs police arrested a convicted sex offender accused of stealing an SUV with a 1-month old baby aboard in Amarillo, Texas.

Allen Compton, 38, spotted the SUV left running and unattended outside a convenience store last week, according to Texas authorities.

The vehicle was found about an hour later at an Amarillo hotel. The baby was still inside and unhurt.

Police received a tip that Compton may be in the Hobbs area. He was quickly found in and arrested on a charge of charged with child endangerment.

Hobbs police also learned he was wanted in California for violating parole stemming from an indecent-exposure conviction.
