ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An Albuquerque teenager nearly blew off his own foot fooling around with a homemade pipe bomb.
Police said the 16-year-old made the crude device out of PVC pipe and Fourth of July sparklers, then set it off near Juan Tabo and Montgomery boulevards in Northeast Albuquerque.
"[He] basically decided to put a whole bunch of sparklers together and ignite them and see how they would react," said Nadine Hamby with the Albuquerque Police Department.
After the bomb went off, the teen called 911. He will need surgery to repair the damage to his foot. He could also face charges for the firework "bomb" as well.
