ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A grand jury believes the 15-year-old Albuquerque boy accused of killing his family should face first degree murder charges.
The grand jury indicted Nehemiah Griego Monday on five counts of first degree murder , each carrying a life sentence.
They also included three counts of child abuse resulting in death for the murders of the three kids.
During trial, a jury could opt for the lesser charges.
On January 20th, Nehemiah allegedly shot his mother, 9-year-old brother and 5 and 2 year-old sisters and then waited for his dad to come home and shot him too.
Nehemiah is being charged as a serious youthful offender which means his case will be handled in the adult courts and he could face adult sanctions.
Remaining members of the family issued another statement Monday defending the boy and criticizing how the case has been handled.
It says, in part, "we believe, however, that with proper mental health evaluation, intensive treatment and ongoing support, Nehemiah can be rehabilitated and eventually rejoin society and our family."
