Teen boys' murders unsolved year later

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's been a year since two teens were gunned down in broad daylight in Albuquerque’s south valley now the family of one of the victims is making a plea to the public for help in solving the murders.

The family of Jeremy Trujillo, 16, says their biggest fear is that another year will go by without justice.

The teen boy and his best friend Samuel Gutierrez, 17, were shot and left to die near an arroyo behind the Trujillo’s home on March 22, 2012.

Trujillo’s father, Jeremy Trujillo, said the boys were walking home from school.

“I called him and he wouldn't answer. I called Samuel and he wouldn't answer,” Jeremy Trujillo said.

Trujillo not only shared his father’s name he also shared his love of hunting and fishing.

The Trujillo family thought by now whoever killed their son and his best friend would be caught.

Surveillance video captured two men riding bikes in that area around the time of the murders.

Police called them persons of interest.

Now that a year has passed, Trujillo’s parents worry interest in the murders has died, too.

“I know there are a lot of people out there who know and if they could just let us know something, we need some type of closure,” Prudie Trujillo said.

“Just because they get to have their life and my son didn't get to have his life -he was a good boy,” Jeremy Trujillo said.

They want their son's killer off the streets before another family is left in tears.

"It’s been hard. It’s been like a nightmare. Time has gone by so fast. I cant believe its already been a year,” Prudie Trujillo said. “He was my heart…my life. I’m just - we're not the same people as we used to be. A part of us is gone forever.”

The Trujillo family says Jeremy wanted to become a forest ranger because he loved hunting and fishing. Samuel Gutierrez was supposed to go into the Marines.

APD said there are new updates on the case. However, last year gang detectives were investigating.

The family says that may be why someone hasn't come forward.

They are urging anyone who knows anything to call police.
