ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A Jimmy Carter Middle School teacher on Thursday pleaded no contest to a count of disorderly conduct in a plea deal that keeps him out of jail for roughing up a student.

Anthony Torres, a physical-education teacher and basketball coach, had originally faced up to a year in jail for misdemeanor aggravated battery and cruelty to children.

Instead, he will have to take anger-management classes.

Last spring, Torres was roughhousing with a student and got mad at him. He chased the student through a crowded hallway and lifted him up by his neck.

Torres will continue to teach at Jimmy Carter.
