LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The mayor-elect of Sunland Park along with the town's acting police chief are both out of jail. Daniel Salinas and Luis Monarez posted their required bail and both men were released from the Dona Ana County Detention Center Wednesday night.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that a day earlier, a state judge lowered the bail for 28-year-old mayor-elect Salinas to $50,000 and $30,000 for Monarez.
Salinas is alleged to have arranged for Monarez to be rehired at the city's police station, in exchange for Monarez persuading his sister not to run in a March 6 city council race.
State Judge Lisa Schultz specified Tuesday that Salinas be on house-arrest, once he posted bail.
Both Monarez and Salinas pleaded not guilty during their initial court appearance.
