Substation named after slain sergeant

BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) - A new substation dedicated to slain Sandoval County Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Harris opened Thursday in Bernalillo.

The 46-year-old died in a shootout with notorious burglar Joseph Burgess at a cabin in the Jemez Mountains last July.

Harris shot and killed Burgess after being fatally wounded.

The Sergeant Joseph A. Harris Substation is located on Rail Runner Avenue next to the Highway 550 transit station.

Rio Rancho also plans to name a new elementary school in Harris's honor.
