Speedcam catches smile, upraised finger

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - A driver who is apparently not camera shy or afraid of expressing himself is now in serious trouble.

Rio Rancho Police say their speed van cameras caught Jayson Casados, 25, speeding 25 times in the past year. And those hand gestures with the middle finger -- the cameras got that too.

Police say one of the videos shows a car registered to Casados blowing through a residential neighborhood at 62 mph where the speed limit is 25.

Another photo shows Casados giving the middle finger to the camera while he is a passenger in his car. He even posted that photo on his Facebook page.

"It appears this has become a bit of a sport for him," said Rio Rancho Police Sergeant Nicholas Onken. "Unfortunately this is a sport that's putting the general public and himself at risk, and that's our concern."

This week police arrested Casados after identifying him as the driver in at least 10 of those 25 speeding photos or videos.

He bonded out of jail, and when KRQE News 13 caught up with him at his apartment, he said he plans on fighting the tickets. He also said he is not a habitual speeder.

"I never remember doing any of that, and if I was going that fast don't you think an officer would have actually caught me speeding instead of just the van," said Casados.

He also says he was not giving the middle finger even though police have that on camera.

Officers say Casados could face up to $5,000 in fines and jail time.
