ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - At the stroke of midnight Tuesday morning, the city of Albuquerque turned off the red light cameras at three intersections.

The cameras at Paseo del Norte Boulevard and Jefferson Street, Coors Boulevard and Montano Road and Coors Boulevard and Paseo del Norte Boulevard are no longer active.

The state ordered the city to shut them down, arguing they cannot operate on state roads and that there is no proof that they make driving safer.

The University of New Mexico is conducting a study on the red light cameras and their effectiveness. Major R. J. Berry said he is waiting to see what the UNM study says about the cameras before he decides if he wants to keep the remaining ones.
