Six-year-old on the mend after shooting

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) - A third teen has been arrested in connection to a drive-by shooting that injured a 6-year-old girl in her sleep and just missed a toddler.

The 6-year-old is out of the hospital, and she and her family spoke with KRQE News 13.

Emma said she's feeling better after a bullet went through her arm early Monday morning as she slept.

"I didn't hear any shooting, I didn't feel it whenever I got shot," she told News 13.

Carlsbad police arrested two 14-year-olds, Christian Cabezuela, and Zane Fernandez, Monday night in connection to what they said was a random drive-by that took place just before 4 a.m. Monday.  

Then Tuesday, police also arrested Andrew Cobos, 17, who investigators said was with them and eventually admitted to his role in the crime.

"Mr. Cobos indicated to us that all three of the juveniles had been at a different location that they wouldn't specify, wouldn't tell us what it was, where they were actually taking methamphetamines," said Lt. Bryan Burns of the Carlsbad Police Department.

Police said it was Cobos' mom's Ford Explorer the teens used in the drive-by and his mom that called police when she found bullet casings.

According to police, Cobos told investigators he stole the gun used in the drive-by from a relative in Roswell and admitted to shooting several rounds from the backseat of a vehicle toward homes on Carver Street.

Gunshots flew through homes and Emma's bedroom window.

"My arm started hurting, and I knocked on Dad's door, and then he turned the cartoons on for me," Emma said.  "Then he saw me covered in blood and that's all I remember."

Emma's mom, Joann Williams was woken up by the call from Emma's dad. They thought at first, Emma had cut herself.

"On my way to the hospital is whenever I found out that she had been shot, and then I really lost it," recalled Williams.

The 6-year-old went through surgery and is now on medication. Although the three teens are in custody, Emma's parents are angry.

"It makes me furious because they did it just for the fun of it, and they shot my 6-year-old child," said Williams. "That's not K.  It's like they have no regard for human life whatsoever."

Emma said she's thankful her baby sister, who was in the bedroom with her that night, wasn't hit.

"It could have hurt her really bad," she said.

Emma is seeing a physical therapist for her injury. Carlsbad Police are still searching for the gun used in the drive-by.

Investigators believe the High Point .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol may have made its way back to Roswell. Anyone with information is asked to call Carlsbad Police or Crime Stoppers at 877-1888.

All three teens are charged with two counts of shooting at a dwelling or occupied building, conspiracy to commit a shooting.  Additionally Cobos is charged with tampering with evidence

Police said the District Attorney's office is reviewing the case.
