DULCE, N.M. (KRQE) - The manhunt for a heavily armed Colorado man appears to have ended with gunshots and the death of the suspect.
The search for 48-year-old Rex Sherwood started Tuesday.
Residents in Dulce and the surrounding areas say they are relieved the fugitive is no longer on the loose.
State police say the incident started at this gas station, where a witness spotted a burglar matching Sherwood's description, breaking in around 8:30 Sunday morning.
Tribal police were called in and officials say the suspect started shooting at them with a high powered rifle, possibly the AK-47 he was spotted with earlier in the week.
State police were on scene in minutes and were shooting flash bangs to try and get the suspect to come out.
When the gunfire stopped, state police sent in the SWAT team and a robot to search the building.
They say the robot found the suspect dead inside.
His body is still inside the gas station and authorities are waiting on a positive identification to confirm that it is Rex Sherwood.
A state police spokesperson says no one else was hurt and they believe the suspect took his own life.
Officers say at least one state police vehicle was shot, but no one was hurt.
