ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Neighbors thought it was fireworks, but it was much worse as gunfire erupted at what had been a kids' birthday party.
Two people were wounded, and a bullet narrowly missed a pregnant woman as rounds hit the car taking one of the injured to a hospital.
Neighbors said there was a kids' birthday party all day Tuesday at the mobile home in the 6600 block of Kelly Avenue NE near San Pedro and Paseo del Norte.
Kids were shooting hoops, and parents drinking.
But police said the drinking turned into fighting, and then by 10:30 p.m. people were shooting at each other.
The shooting started inside the home and it continued onto the street.
A woman was shot twice, once in the chest and in the leg, and a man was shot once in the leg. Their injuries did not appear to be fatal, police said.
Police say as one of the party-goers began to drive one of the victims to the hospital, a shooter came outside.
Witnesses told police they saw him pull the trigger about three times aiming for people inside the car. One bullet missed the pregnant woman in the car by inches.
On Wednesday neighbors told KRQE News 13 they heard about 10 gunshots in all.
It went like 'Moof. Moof.' Like that," Brenda Heacock said. "It wasn't a solid bang like a firework is."
It's still unclear what caused the fighting to start although police said alcohol was the biggest factor.
Two people were arrested although their names and charges have not yet been released. At last report they had not been formally charged booked into jail.
