ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - The list of the Top 5 fugitives wanted by Bernalillo County sheriff's investigators includes suspects alleged to be a crooked used-car salesman, an apologetic burglar and a woman who likes to steal even though she's battling cancer.
All are familiar faces to the sheriff's Street Crimes Unit which released the list Friday.
"These are people that we've run into maybe on numerous occasions," Sgt. Sid Covington said. "We'd like to apprehend them."
The Top 5:
Lesa Horn
Horn is accused of stealing thousands of dollars in scrap metal while battling terminal cancer. Deputies said she tried to remove copper and aluminum piping from a property and when they arrested her she complained of shortness of breath caused by the cancer she had.
She was taken to a local hospital and hasn't been seen since, according to deputies.
Ruben Macias
Covington said Macias is well-known because of his rampant criminal activity. He's wanted for dealing drugs and stealing cars.
Investigators said he was even selling cocaine in the front yard of a home in his neighborhood.
Raul Marrufo
Marrufo is also accused of liking cars that don't belong to him.
Fernando Camuñez-Dozal
Camuñez-Dozal is accused of selling stolen cars on the side of the road to unsuspecting customers. According to police reports, Camunez-Dozal switches the VIN numbers of the stolen car with another car so that his customers don't know right away that the vehicle their buying is stolen.
"When they go to register the vehicle they find out that it's stolen," Covington said. "So they're out the cash, they're out the vehicle and he gets away."
Christopher Candelaria
Investigators said Candelaria broke into his own workplace this past summer and ripped off his boss Richard Heissenbuttle. Not once but twice.
The first time he allegedly pushed in an exhaust fan and jumped through a hole in the wall stealing equipment, change from a couple candy machines and cash.
Heissenbuttle said he knew Candelaria did it because he made sure to apologize in writing.
"He left a written note telling us he broke in and that he owed us the $188," Heissenbuttle said.
Then investigators said Candelaria signed it, "Love you always, Chris."
"Yeah, well, I don't know what he means by that," Heissenbuttle said. "I don't call that love when you steal from somebody."
Heissenbuttle said he hopes Candelaria turns himself in. So does Covington.
"This is ongoing criminal activity, and if we can take these people off the streets then hopefully that'll rid the streets of some of the crime," Covington said.
There are rewards out for the arrests of the five. Call police or Crime Stoppers at (505) 843-STOP (843-7867). You can remain anonymous.
