AF sergeant, wife indicted in child's death

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A U.S. Air Force sergeant and his wife have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to the 2007 death of their infant daughter.
The U.S. attorney's office says 27-year-old John Zayas and 30-year-old Sophia Monique Zayas were arrested Tuesday. They're set to make their first appearance in federal court in Las Cruces on Thursday.
The seven-count indictment alleges the couple tortured and abused their 2-month-old daughter and she died as a result.
Sgt. Zayas has been stationed at Holloman Air Force Base, where the abuse allegedly occurred.
U.S. attorney's office spokeswoman Elizabeth Martinez attributed the delay in filing charges to an extensive forensic investigation and a state investigation. The couple don't yet have a lawyer.
