ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Two brothers from Elida died Thursday when a tractor-trailer rig hit their dump truck from behind on U.S. Highway 70 in Chaves County, New Mexico State Police reported.
Fred Anthony, 72, and Ronald Anthony, 76, died at the scene of the crash about 40 miles northeast of Roswell.
State Police reported Fred Anthony was at the wheel of the 1965 Chevrolet dump truck and headed east toward Elida when the semi driven by David Wright of Portales struck it from behind.
The dump truck rolled ejecting the brothers while the semi continued across the median and westbound lanes onto the far shoulder.
Wright, 50, was treated for injuries at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales and released.
U.S. 70 was closed for about nine hours during the investigation.
The investigating officer reported seatbelts were not in use and alcohol did not appear to be involved. The officer listed driver inattention and fatigue as contributing factors in the crash.
No citations have yet been issued.
