ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - The police force in Roswell is growing, but the police chief there said it's still not enough.
In January KRQE News 13 reported the Roswell Police force was down 25 officers .
It was so bad that the police chief pulled the department's only school resource officer out of the schools and put her on patrol.
Since then, the department has hired eight more officers and has 11 recruits in the hiring process.
Roswell Police Chief Al Solis credits more aggressive recruiting , and a streamlined hiring process for the boost in officers but said the process is ongoing.
"If I hire some, and then sometimes other people leave, they retire or something, so it's a never-ending process," he said. "But if I can just get close to the number I'm authorized, I'll be happy with that."
The department is authorized for 96 officers, so it still needs to fill 17 more spots.
