ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The 16-year-old Albuquerque teen who allegedly shot his father while on a hunting trip in the Gila National Forest had threatened his father before, according to an Albuquerque police report.
On April 15, Thomas Manning got into a verbal altercation with his mother, and Thomas’s father, Jeffrey Manning, 43, stepped in to control his son, police reported. The two got into a fight which was described as a “wrestle.”
Once Jeff had Thomas pinned, he didn’t let him go because Thomas kept threatening he would kill Jeff, officers reported.
Thomas had a physical altercation with his mother the day before, and police filed a report.
In August, Thomas entered a no-contest plea to one count of domestic violence. In exchange, a second count and another case, in which the boy brought a knife to school, were dropped.
Thomas was placed on six months probation for the domestic violence plea. He was ordered not to leave the county and not to possess or be around anyone with weapons.
A Bernalillo County juvenile probation officer allowed Thomas to go on the hunting trip in Grant County with his father. On Sunday, sheriff’s deputies allege, Thomas pulled the trigger and shot his father.
When Thomas was arrested he had a gun on him, and investigators said they found another gun at the scene. The teen initially told deputies the shooting was an accident but is now facing an open count of murder.
The juvenile district attorney in Grant County is requesting a preliminary hearing for the boy. At that time, the judge will decide if he is charged with second-degree murder or first-degree, which is premeditated.
