Rent dispute sparked double shooting

SANTA FE (KRQE) - A dispute over unpaid rent left two people dead in Santa Fe Monday at the hands of their landlord , who remains at large, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office reports.

Arthur Anaya, 54, owned the trailer occupied by Theresa Vigil, 51, her daughter Natalie Vigil, 17, and Natalie’s boyfriend Austin Urban, 16.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators assembled this account of what happened:

Anaya phoned Theresa Vigil on Monday about owed rent money. Vigil’s daughter told police her mother told Anaya she would have the money for him on Friday. Anaya then arrived at the residence looking for Vigil.

Natalie Vigil told police that when he arrived he punched both her and her mother in the face. At that time, Urban came out of a room and a physical altercation ensued between the two men before Anaya shot Urban in the face, causing a fatal injury.

Moments later Vigil’s mother regained her composure and attempted to confront Anaya, at which time Anaya shot her in the forehead.

Anaya allegedly attempted to have Natalie Vigil and her friend, Javier Salcido, who was at the home at the time of the incident, to load the bodies of Vigil’s mother and Urban into the trunk of a vehicle.

Vigil and Salcido were able to retrieve the body of Vigil’s mother, who was at the time still conscious, and rush her to the hospital.

Hospital officials contacted police about the incident and officers responded to the home where the incident took place on Paseo Galisteo where they found the deceased body of Urban.

Theresa Vigil succumbed to her injuries late Monday evening.

Detectives have issued an arrest warrant for Anaya, who they believe is still in Santa Fe, on two open counts of murder.

According to information obtained by News 13 Anaya has a violent criminal history and in 1994 was found guilty but mentally ill on more than a dozen violent crimes.
