ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A state prison contract worker has been arrested after he was accused of having contraband.
The corrections department says Mel Baca was acting suspiciously Sunday when he was working in food service at the prison in Los Lunas.
Officials say a guard searched Baca and found contraband food, a cell phone in his lunchbox, alcohol, a 12-inch knife and prescription drugs in his truck.
All of which is illegal on prison grounds.
”If you even begin to think about contraband into prison facilities, it's probably good to have notice that those fence lines are being watched in ways never before seen, and you'll find yourself one step closer to a prison cell,” Secretary Gregg Marcantel said.
Marcantel is now investigating whether Baca has ever successfully smuggled contraband into the jail.
