Deadly cop shooting caught on tape

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - When the 911 call came from a woman saying she was locked in a car trunk, Albuquerque Police Department Officer Andrew Zwicky was first to arrive at the Flying J Truck Stop.

A short time later Julian Calbert lay dead by the gas pumps shot multiple times as he attacked the officer in a scene recorded by a surveillance camera.

The video from the June incident at the truck stop just off Interstate 40 in northwest Albuquerque was released to the news media on Thursday.

The video shows Zwicky approach the car and glance at the bumper where he saw blood. Then he walked to the driver's door and told a man sitting inside to get out and open the trunk.

That man was Calbert, 42. When the officer told a woman passenger to get back into the car Calbert lunged at him.

APD Chief Ray Schultz said the man was holding a folding knife in his hand.

The video then shows Zwicky shoot Calbert four to five times in the chest and in the head.

"People always think there was another option. You could have changed you're behavior, you could have had a different reaction,” Schultz said. “This is perfect example of what we have to deal with and how very often we don't have that opportunity."

Police said the woman in the trunk was Calbert’s estranged wife. The wife and woman in the passenger seat were kidnapped earlier that night from University of New Mexico Hospital.

The wife called 911 from the trunk, and the dispatcher sent police. A grand jury determined the shooting was justified.

On Friday, a group that's been criticizing the recent APD shootings is holding a protest downtown.

Schultz insisted Thursday’s video release had nothing to do with the planned protest. He said it just happened to be available now.

There have been 12 police-involved shootings; eight have been deadly.
