SANTA FE (KRQE) - Details of what a murdered man’s wife told Santa Fe detectives and 911 dispatchers after finding the body are spelled out in a search warrant filed on Wednesday.
Santa Fe police said the murder of Ethaan Boyer on Feb. 23 had signs of a burglary, and the words from the dead man's wife point to that theory.
Search warrant documents quote Boyer’s wife as saying she came home at around 5 p.m. and found her husband lying face down in the hallway.
She said she told a 911 operator their back bedroom looked like it had been ransacked, and the guest bedroom dresser drawers were open and rummaged through.
She told the operator when she lifted her husband's shirt she noticed a puncture wound that looked like a gunshot.
However, Capt. Aric Wheeler said there is one thing that is not as obvious and that would be how the killer got inside the home.
“That there were no signs of forced entry,” Wheeler said. “That obviously is a concern for us.”
The search warrant also detailed detectives took finger prints from the front door, the back door and a dresser. For now, detectives do not know if the prints were left behind by the murderer.
Detectives said there have been a number of burglaries in that area in the last couple of months. Wheeler said detectives are looking at those cases as well as those from the past year.
Police hope something from those other burglaries will point them to Boyer's killer.
“Obviously individuals that have a pattern go for similar type of stolen items,” Wheeler said.
Detectives said they are also looking into convicted felons who live in the area to see if their crimes match the murder and suspected burglary.
There was a private memorial for Boyer on Wednesday.
