LORDSBURG, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police and federal agents are wrapping up an aggressive effort to round up illegal weapons and stall narcotic trafficking in New Mexico's Bootheel area.
The New Mexico State Police Aircraft Section is finishing Sunday its participation an "Operation Ridge Line," a joint field operation with the New Mexico National Guard Counter Drug Support Task Force and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
"Operation Ridge Line" is the first of several operations that the State Police Aircraft section will join throughout the year.
The U.S. Border Patrol is building an outpost in the state's Bootheel to battle human smuggling and drug trafficking. Federal officials say the mountainous area is one of the nation's last unguarded border regions.
