DULCE, N.M. (KRQE) - Police have now named the man they suspect of firing an automatic weapon at tribal police on Tuesday before vanishing into the mountains of northern New Mexico.
Late Wednesday the FBI and New Mexico State Police named Rex Michael Sherwood, 48, as their suspected gunman.
The manhunt for Sherwood is continuing near Monero near the Colorado border between Chama and Dulce.
The incident began Tuesday when Jicarilla Apache police stopped a vehicle east of Dulce on U.S. Highway 64.
An officer saw a gun and bullet-resistant vest in his car, but as questioning began the driver sped off.
After a short pursuit, Sherwood got out of the vehicle and began firing an automatic weapon at the officers, State Police reported. Sherwood then took off on foot into the mountains.
The officers were not injured.
Police said they considered Sherwood to be extremely dangerous and asked anyone who spots him or has information on his whereabouts to call State Police at (505) 753-2277.
When last seen, Sherwood was wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt, blue jacket and a baseball cap. He is 6 feet tall, weighs 160 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.
Police have yet to release information of Sherwood's background or previous criminal record.
