GRANTS, N.M. (KRQE) - New Mexico State Police and Grants Police are investigating the homicide of the chief of police's nephew, Jose Rivera, 29.
Police say Rivera's live-in girlfriend called 911 Monday, saying the two had gotten into a fight. When officers arrived, they found Rivera's body inside the mobile home.
Sources say Rivera was stabbed to death with a sword.
State Police are assisting in the investigation.
They say the woman at the center of the case has not been arrested. Police have questioned her, but have not determined if this was self defense or murder.
Grants Police say it is not uncommon to ask State Police to assist in homicide investigations, but because Rivera was a relative of the chief of police, they wanted to make sure an outside agency was involved.
