CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) - Authorities have cleared a New Mexico state police officer in the fatal shooting of a man in Clovis.

District Attorney Matt Chandler says Officer Bryan Conner had no other choice but to shoot Benjamin Selgado earlier this month.

Police say Conner tried to pull over Selgado, 29 for speeding. That lead to a chase before Selgado pulled over and took off on foot.

Conner says when he caught up with Selgado he heard two clicks come from the handgun Selgado was pointing at him. So he fired in self-defense.

A .38 caliber pistol was recovered at the scene with two live rounds in it and two spent casings each with two impressions for the firing pin indicating they had cycled through the gun twice.  Conner hit Selgado with three bullets.

Selgado was wanted at the time on a drug-trafficking and firearms charges.

Dash-camera video from Conner's squad car recorded the chase through Clovis and the near-miss of a collision when Selgado braked as he ran a stop sign. A security camera at a motel then recorded the shooting.

Chandler released still images from the video Friday.
